Past Events

The history of American Family Insurance started on October 3, 1927, when insurance salesman Herman Wittwer in Madison, Wisconsin, launched Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (which should not be confused with the Farmers Insurance Group). Farmers were the company’s primary target market at the time, and its sole product was auto insurance. Wittwer thought that because farmers drove less or not at all during the winter, they posed fewer risks than drivers in cities.[Reference required] Farmers Mutual increased the scope of its offerings and market over time in response to shifting consumer demands. American Family Mutual Insurance Company replaced Farmers Mutual as the company’s name in 1963 to better represent its wider clientele. American Family paid $14.5 million to the victims of a redlining action that was settled in March of 1995. At the time, the payment was the most expensive insurance business settlement for discrimination allegations in history. It was negotiated by the US Department of Justice and represented the first application of the federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 to combat prejudice in insurance. DreamFearlessly is an ongoing campaign that AmFam initiated in 2017. This hashtag is used by AmFam ambassadors on social media to help spread the word about the campaign. Customers are urged by the promotion to share how they “dream fearlessly” for causes including economic empowerment, social justice, and advancing women in technology. Early on, Kathy Ireland and her group were invited in to assist with ambassadorial activities. Blake Van Leer, a fervent advocate of the Society of Women Engineers, assisted in overseeing this initiative from its inception.
